HAHA I had no idea what i wanted to talk about today until that lil happy accident of a title, this isnt gonna be as liberal as yesterday but its something that bothers me nonetheless.
RAP
ok.. so im sure i typed that and all sorts of assumptions jumped into your mind, but i assure you, this isnt about that.
This is something really simple.. and im going to leave this open because i really would like some sort of sensible answer to this...
How come when i listen to a radio station that claims to play the "Best HipHop and RnB" i hear Plies,or Soulja Boy or about 50 million others, who are not in any way shape or form HipHop, sure they may be great rappers.. but HIPHOP?!?! I thought HipHop was intelligent or political or poetic, stuff like Common, or even Drake (to some extent), dont get me wrong, i listen to EVERYTHING , but on NO planet is Waka or GunPlay HIPHOP!!!
And while im asking for opinions on the misnaming of music.. how come if i go to a TOP40 night at a club, its 100% Rap? I would think, a top40... night.. would.. PLAY TOP 40.. and im 100% positive that rap , while it might take up a majority of the list at times , is NOT the entirety of the Billboard top 40 chart.
So ring in, let me know how you feel about this, i feel like i would like to be able to listen to a hiphop station or go to a hiphop show and listen to some back packing, graffiti spraying, opinionated HIPHOP, or even go to a TOP 40 club and occasionally here some of the rock OR EVEN COUNTRY that OBVIOUSLY was in the top40 songs this week, month or year.

I wish I had answers to that... You are 100% correct though... Plies is not hip hop. I dont think Drake is either. Its hard to find someone like Mos Def in todays world because people dont want to hear that. Its called the dumbing down of america. People have lost the ability to process intellectual speech patterns. Instead now they want to hear morons say ANYTHING that rhymes over a million dollar beat. Hip hop can take any beat, any sample, even silence and drop knowledge that NEVER becomes obsolete. Blame society for the fading of the great art of hip hop.
ReplyDeleteDrake is about the closest thing on the radio to hiphop currently in rotation, the only reason he gets credit is because of the lack of competition. Even , did you hear the mims cd? The one with "This is why im hot" on it? That was the worst song on the cd the rest of it was actually REALLY musical and had some story to it... so of course.. NONE of them made it into a single, hell even David Banner is stuck on a shelf somewhere doing the only thing that great hiphop artists can do now a days, write beats for Rappers. (Ok.. or MAYBE ghost write songs)
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna invite you to a page that actually has some really good hip hop on it and it has alot of these conversations goign on in it... Check your facebook in a few minutes... I'll add you to the group... its called the lyrical link.
ReplyDeleteYou are member number 100 in the Lyrical Link!!! Drop a line and tell us what ya think!
ReplyDeleteOK so...Im a recording artist and I fully believe that some of my songs are rap while others is Hip Hop. The two names are similiar but totally different genres of music. Rap is Nelly, while Hip Hop is Canibus or Mos Def or KRS One. Rap is more listened to nowadays than Hip Hop, although I fully extend my ears to everything! Rap is more entertaining than it is about real life. I hate when people associate P Diddy with Hip Hop! Shit is assbackwards!
